Move your Company, Depress the Economy?

Companies move every day. Some businesses choose to relocate because of expansion, others because of better business opportunities in a specific market. However, many people living and working in California are now starting to blame these relocating companies for compromising the job market in the state. If you own a business and are calling up a moving company to come and relocate your office and staff, are you also calling attention to a growing problem in California?
Well, don’t be so quick to blame the higher rate of jobless folks in California on the companies moving out of the state. The fact is that while it may seem like companies leaving the state contribute to the decline in available jobs, in reality, companies moving out of state only account for about 1.7% of job losses every year. This is according to a report by economist Jed Kelko, author of Business Location Decisions and Employment Dynamics in California for the Public Policy Institute of California.
The majority of jobs lost annually is caused by companies going under or laying off employees, making up for 99% of the job losses in California. Looks like the job market is still depressed from companies not being able to stay afloat in the struggling economy, and not so much from California businesses moving to another state. So, if you’re hiring a mover this weekend to relocate your business, don’t worry. The withering employment rate isn’t to blame on you.
