Philadelphians Try to Save the Tastykakes; Company’s Move Bolsters Troubles

From the Facebook group trying to “Save the Tastykakes” to Causes.com’s “Save Tastykake” page, many Philadelphians are in an uproar over the Philadelphia snack cake icon struggling to survive into today’s times…and economy.

Tastykake is a household name in the Northeast, though if you travel a few states over, most will have no idea what you’re talking about. For those who do know, Tastykake produces the delicious little delights including Krimpets, Juniors and Kandy Kakes and 200+ more confections. However, the 97-year-old company has been struggling of late, every since moving within Philadelphia – specifically from Hunting Park to the Navy Yard. With the move came increased operations costs amid a serious economic downturn. The company currently has $100 million in debt; do you think that the Tastykakes can be saved?

Temple Students on the Move from On-Campus Community

Many students of Temple University might be looking for Philadelphia movers soon, as rent rates have raised and students are feeling slighted. Though Temple used to be primarily a commuter school, real estate development companies have been building, buying and restoring off-campus housing catering to students. However, the profits these companies are seeing from what it costs to purchase this housing compared to what they’re charging budget-conscious students and the impact the growth has had on the community is what has some people up in arms.

Non-students, or families that live in these off-campus communities, are less than pleased with all the new development, as it has caused their cost of living to rise as well. These contractors and realtors are coming under fire for the higher rents for students as well as the hike in cost of living for locals.

Is there a solution to this problem for Temple students and local residents living in these communities? Or is the only real solution to pick up and move from Philadelphia’s Temple University off-campus housing?

The Nutcracker Is An Annual Philadelphia Holiday Treat

Recent Philly transplants may be unaware of one our city's best holiday traditions: yearly performances of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker . The Balanchine-choreographed version of Pyotr Tchaikovsky's ballet is one of the most popular ballets in America, and is now in its 42nd year of production by Philadelphia's Pennsylvania Ballet.

There's really nothing on earth that can match the physical feat of ballet. The grace and fluidity of Balanchine's choreography highlight the beauty of the human form, and Tchaikovsky's lively score is a treat for music lovers. Also, George Balanchine's The Nutcracker™ has a fantastical, delightful story that kids can follow and enjoy - it's a wonderful show for the whole family.

George Balanchine's The Nutcracker™ runs from December 4th to December 31st, so purchase your tickets today. It's a great Philadelphia tradition - and, if you're new here, there's no better introduction to the magic of the holiday season in our city.

Watch Out: Moving Art at the Philadelphia Art Museum

If you live near the Philly area or are planning to move to Philadelphia within the next decade, take note of the 10-year sweeping construction plan underway at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Starting November 9, 2010, the museum will begin a three-phase construction process to expand a large, underground area measuring more than 80,000 square feet. The underground expansion was designed by the famous architect, Frank Gehry, and requires an excavation to remove bedrock beneath the museum’s foundation and front steps.

Any professional fine art moving company, like us here at S&D Transfer, realizes the undertaking that is involved with moving invaluable art and sculptures. We look forward to seeing the innovative underground expansion of the famous museum over the upcoming years. What do you think of the museum construction? Do you think it will impact the integrity or the look of the landmark museum?

Pack Your Bags, the Kardashians are Moving to NYC

If you’re a fan of Kim, Khloe and Kourtney, call your New York moving company, because the girls are moving to the Big Apple. If you follow the show on E! Network “Keeping up with the Kardashians,” or you just happen to log onto a computer once a day, you probably know that two of the three sisters are moving to New York City. The Kardashians have moved all over the U.S., from Calabasas to Miami and now conquering the East Coast.

The question now is, how many of their rabid fans will follow? And if so, how many will even be able to relocate to an area in NYC that’s even remotely close to the DASH girls? Because according to how much these girls are making off their careers, the cost of the real estate will likely be astronomical. Instead of moving to NYC, it might be best to watch their travels from the comfort of your couch.
